Reagan, Churchill earn Game 1 wins in 6A baseball regional semifinals

CORPUS CHRISTI - Reagan is the No. 2 baseball team in the state and they looked like it on Thursday night.

Cal Carver hurled a complete game, giving up just two runs on three hits and struck out nine in leading the Rattlers (33-6) to a 10-2 rout of Laredo Alexander (24-11) in Game 1 of the Class 6A regional semifinals at Sinton High School.

Both teams are into the regional semifinals for the fourth time in five years.

Carver, who is committed to Witchita State, leads Reagan’s rotation with 1.09 ERA and 0.86 WHIP while striking out 33 in 25.2 innings.

Hilton Brown got the Rattlers on the board first with an RBI double in the top of the third. Laredo Alexander issued an intentional walk to set up a double play, but after a walk and two hit battlers, Reagan plated three more runs. An RBI ground out put the Rattlers ahead 5-0.

Brown wasn't done, as he blasted a two-run homer in the fourth en route to the easy victory.

The winner of this week’s series will take on the winner between San Antonio Churchill and Edinburg Vela in the finals for a spot in the state tournament.
