Ranger Creek: Come for the beer, stay for the whiskey

SAN ANTONIO - Craft beer, distilled whiskey and brick oven pizza; Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling delivers a great experience worth talking about.

Ranger Creek is a small brewery in the business park warehouse on the city’s North Side. When you first walk in, the wooden tables, floors and walls combine with subdued (some may even say romantic) lighting that makes it easy to relax. The bar is right there on your right and whiskey barrels fill the wall to the left. You now know exactly what they have to offer.

The friendly staff delivers a great atmosphere for trying something new. They are very knowledgeable and talk with passion about their work.

I sampled two of their draft beers: San Antonio Lager and Mission Trail. The San Antonio Lager is a sweet beer with a tropical taste. It’s easy to drink and flavorful. The Mission Trail is a light and crisp beer with very hoppy taste. (Pro Tip: They have San Antonio Lager at HEB.)

I went in with a mission of drinking craft beers, but was quickly redirected to the distilled whiskey. I was hooked! I'm a man who loves his whiskey, and as soon as I tried a glass of the .36 Texas Straight Bourbon my focus went entirely to their whiskey.

This isn't some whiskey you mix with soda. Its a whiskey you drink straight. It's smooth with a cinnamon, butter scotch and mellow caramel flavor. But be careful how fast you drink because It's strong. You can't get all the flavors when you shoot it.

The second one I tried was the Texas Rimfire. With this whiskey I added a few cubes of ice which delivered a smooth drink with a light mesquite smoked flavor. It's a great whiskey that's great just drinking straight.

On my next trip to Ranger Creek I plan on sampling their two other whiskeys, .44 Rye and .36 White, both of which are part of the small caliber series. You can find Ranger Creek whiskeys at select stores, and the Ranger Creek Whiskey Club allows access to member discounts and exclusive releases.

On the menu I got to try homemade pizza made by Vero Wood Fire Pizza. They offer a thin New York style pizza. The dough is hand tossed, and everything from the sauce to the toppings are fresh. The mobile wood fire oven cooks your pizza in 90 seconds.

Visit Ranger Creek for more information on their beer, whiskey, tours, events and their store.
