Our City Our History: Woodlawn Lake
Woodlawn Lake Park, originally known as "West End Lake," was also called the finest artificial lake in the south.
It was a large piece of private land, deeded to the city in 1918.
"It wasn't until about maybe 30 or 40 years ago that the city completed some of the drudging and it really looks as beautiful as it does today," said District 7 councilwoman Ana Sandoval.
Over the years it not only changed its name to Woodlawn Lake but it received plenty of upgrades and add-ons too.
Woodlawn became the official site of the city's annual 4th of July celebration in the late 1990's. It's still a popular gathering spot generation after generation.
The park's 100th birthday celebration is happening this Friday at 6:30 p.m.
