SAN ANTONIO -- This San Antonio landmark is now celebrating 50 years.
In this week's "Our City, Our History" we introduce you to Hemisfair, which opened at the official 1968 world's fair. For six months San Antonio welcomed more than 30 nations and six million visitors.
"The 1968 World Fair was an idea of business people in and around the San Antonio area," said Andres Andujar, CEO of Hemisfair. All of them together organized the World Fair -- to put San Antonio on the map."
The park has been home to a number of events over the years but it's undergoing major changes. City Council set up a non-profit called "Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation" in 2009. The group oversees the projects which include adding a large green space, rehabilitating historic homes and, yes, more parking for visitors.
Hemisfair will host Luminaria this weekend, beginning Saturday at 7 p.m. It's free and open to the public.
