SAN ANTONIO – A "Wreaths Across America" convoy will be traveling from New Braunfels to San Antonio Friday morning and will affect traffic along Interstate 35 and around Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

The convoy will include 14 18-wheelers and close to 100 motorcyclists. The group will leave the Walnut Square Shopping Center parking lot in New Braunfels and head towards Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. The big rigs will be carrying wreaths from Wreaths Across America to place on headstones at the cemetery.

Wreaths Across America’s goal each year is to raise close to $2 million so that every headstone at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery can have a wreath. (If there are not enough wreaths for each headstone, pennies will be placed on the headstones.)

The New Braunfels Police Department and Bexar County Sheriff's Office will be providing a six-car police escort from New Braunfels to the Cemetery.

The New Braunfels, Schertz, Selma and San Antonio will also have fire trucks and police on various overpasses between New Braunfels and the cemetery draping American flags over I-35 as the convoy passes. Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will also be on the overpasses as the convoy heads to the Cemetery.

10th Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony

This is all being done in preparation for the 10th annual Wreath Laying Ceremony which will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16th at the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery Pavilion, located in the middle of the cemetery.

Since traffic will be heavy and people will be parking throughout the cemetery and walking to the Pavilion, attendees are asked to arrive NO LATER THAN 9 a.m. on Saturday. A large motorcycle convoy, which will include Girl and Cub Scout troops, will leave the Lowe's parking lot on Austin Highway in San Antonio at 10:30 a.m. and travel to the Cemetery. The ceremony will begin once the motorcycle convoy arrives.
