SAN ANTONIO - As more COVID-19 vaccines continue to rollout across San Antonio, VIA Metropolitan Transit is working to make sure residents have a way of getting to the distribution sites!

VIA announced Sunday it will be offering free rides to people going to and from a city or county sponsored COVID-19 vaccination site. This includes the Alamodome, Wonderland of the Americas Mall and the WellMed Elvira Cisneros Senior Community Center to name a few, as city leaders say more sites would soon be set up in other districts.

“VIA offers this fare-assistance program as part of our mission to ‘connect our community’ and ensure people can reach critical destinations and services, using safe, reliable public transportation options,” VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said. “We support local efforts to expand access to the COVID vaccine and will keep doing our part to help protect the health and safety of our community.”

The news comes after the Department of State and Health Services (DSHS) announced Bexar County would be receiving nearly 20,000 doses of the vaccine on Monday.

According to a press release, these bus rides will be applicable to regular services, VIA Link, and VIAtrans paratransit service. Residents will still have to schedule their bus rides by phone or online but to qualify for a free ride, must be able to show their appointment registration in print or from their mobile devices as well as a COVID-19 shot record.
