VIA exploring new program similar to Uber, Lyft
SAN ANTONIO - VIA is exploring a new transit program similar to Uber and Lyft.
The idea for "Mobility on Demand" is to swap out traditional bus services with cars or vans. Instead of walking to a bus stop and waiting, VIA would pick up riders at their homes, jobs or anywhere. Then riders have to be dropped off within a restricted zone or directly at a transit center where they could hop on a bus.
VIA is now in the process of issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a pilot project.
"The main thing is we want to be able to connect the residents to their destinations -- quicker, fast more convenient way and at a lower cost," said Lorraine Pulido, spokeswoman with VIA. "VIA is is always looking at various options to accomplish those goals."
Phoenix and Dallas already use this program, and Arlington has gotten rid of their buses completely for this program.
The exact cost for the service is still in the works.
