SAN ANTONIO -- South San Antonio Independent School District announced its superintendent lone finalist at a board meeting Tuesday night. The position came open when current superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra announced his retirement.
The board of trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. Alexandro (Alex) M. Flores as the finalist for the position. Flores has been serving at the superintendent with Palacios Independent School District since 2015. According to a news release, he navigated the loss of approximately 12% of their annual budget by developing and implementing a 3-year financial contingency plan.
He also served as the assistant superintendent for Natalia Independent School District. This included serving as interim superintendent between 2014-2015.
“I’m ecstatic for the opportunity. It is just a great district to help lead and take to the next level,” said Dr. Flores after being named the lone finalist. He added, “Everybody knows that the future of public education is changing, so now it is about adapting and offering parents choices. And this is exactly the vision that South San has.”
The state requires a 21-day waiting period after which the board is expected to offer Flores an employment contract.
