Original story:

A suspect died after he was shot by a police officer on the West Side.

Police Chief William McManus said a Park Police officer was flagged down by a woman in the 200 block of Zarzamora around 8:40 p.m. Thursday -- the woman told the officer her boyfriend was assaulting her.

Witnesses told authorities that the officer attempted to intervene when the woman's boyfriend pulled a knife on the officer. Witnesses said the woman attempted to wrestle the knife away from her boyfriend, but was unsuccessful, and the man charged at the officer. The officer deployed his taser, but the taser was ineffective, prompting the officer to fire his service weapon several times, witnesses said.

It's unclear how many times the man was shot. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.
