SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio police officer injured in a shooting last July is determined to return to his normal duties as a patrol officer.

Officer Nathan Becerra was responding to a robbery at Northwest Sade apartment when he was shot twice. Becerra and officer Miguel Medina found three men inside a vehicle. Two of the men resisted arrest and the third pulled out a gun and struck Becerra twice. The suspect, Giovani Casianoa, was killed while the other two men were arrested.

Becerra spent several weeks in the hospital recovering. One of his gunshot wounds caused some nerve damage in his leg and extended his stay. He credits his partner Medina for saving his life.

"You know they say we are brothers in blue, but he literally saved my life," Becerra said. "We were friends before, but now he's my brother."

Becerra, a four-year veteran with the police department, was shot less than one month after officers Miguel Moreno and Julio Cavazos were shot.
