Babcock Road reopens following school bus accident, gas leak

Accident prompted closure of Babcock Road near Wurzbach on Friday, December 7, 2018. (SBG San Antonio)

UPDATE AT 10:40 A.M.: San Antonio Police confirm that Babcock Road is open in both directions.

Police say no one was hurt after several cars crashed along Babcock Road near Wurzbach on Friday morning, causing a gas leak and forcing a complete shutdown of the roadway for several hours.

Investigators said the accident happened when the driver of a car failed to see a stopped school bus along the side of the road. It was apparently obscured by a VIA bus that was stopped behind it. The driver slammed on the brakes when she finally saw the bus, but was rear-ended by another car. A third car and the school bus were also hit.

None of the eleven students on the bus were injured, but officers closed Babcock Road because one of the cars apparently hit a gas meter, causing a leak. The roadway remained closed while CPS Energy crews attempted to shut off the gas.

A Northside ISD spokesperson said the bus was carrying eleven students from Thornton Elementary School. They were loaded onto a second bus and taken to campus.

    No one else was hurt.
