SAN ANTONIO -- Police say a suspected wrong way driver tried to run off after he was involved in a crash that left five vehicles damaged and shut down traffic on a section Culebra Road for hours.
The accident happened just after 1 p.m. on the 1400 block of Culebra Road, between NW 18th Street and Glenmore, on the West Side. Police say the driver of a red car was traveling the wrong way and crashed into a white car. A truck carrying construction material was also hit. This led to chain reaction that caused two other vehicles to crash, including a truck that slammed into a pole.
Witnesses said the driver of the red car took off on foot and then got onto a bus. Police officers were able to stop the bus and take a suspect into custody. They say the man is now facing a charge of "failure to stop and render aid."
No one was seriously injured in the crash, but two people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Culebra Road was closed from 24th Street to Goodrich to allow crews to clear the wreckage and debris. Police said they expected to reopen the lanes by around 4 p.m.
