Man who shot landlord, son over rent dispute was defending himself, say police
SAN ANTONIO —
Police say a tenant who shot and killed his landlord over past due rent was defending himself against the landlord and her son.
The deadly shooting happened over the weekend at a home on Vista Street.
According to preliminary information provided by the San Antonio Police Department, Oscar Martinez, 59, was behind on his rent.
On Saturday, landlord Jennifer Alvarado, 43, went to the home with her 18-year-old son. Police say the pair entered the home with a metal post from a chain link fence and began to assault Martinez with the post.
They believe Martinez was defending himself when he shot Alvarado and her son several times.
Alvarado was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center where she later died. Her son, Jose Chagolla, 18, defended his mother on Sunday.
"Whatever is going to go on," Jose said. "Bring justice to my mom." Police said charges are pending against the younger Alvarado.
Martinez was also hospitalized in critical condition. Police say he suffered head trauma.
