Man killed after firing at officers identified
SAN ANTONIO —
A man that was shot and killed by officers Monday evening on the city's East side has been identified.
Authorities were called to Iowa and South Pine at about 5:45 p.m. for reports of an officer-involved shooting.
Police said the man was pointing a gun at people at the VIA bus stop. When the officer arrived, he found him walking away from the bus stop. The officer started honking at him to get his attention. Police said the suspect then spun toward him and opened fire on the officer. A VIA Police officer then pulled up behind the officer when the shooting started. The officer returned fire through the windshield of his vehicle, striking the suspect, who fled around 15 yards before collapsing and dying. No officers were injured in the shooting, police said.
The man who died as identified as Robert Bob Cruz, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
The San Antonio Police officer has been with the department for 30 years, while the VIA Police officer has spent less than two years with VIA.
