Lone Star celebrating Texas Independence Day with 'Come And Take It' cans

TexasIndependenceDay is coming up on March2. and Lone Star is using their cans for aspecialsalutetothecourageofarebelliousgroupof settlerswhofoughtadetachmentofMexicanarmysoldiersnearGonzales duringtheTexasRevolution.

In1831,whenTexaswasstillaMexicanterritory,MexicanauthoritiesgavethesettlersatGonzalesasmallcannontoprotectagainstfrequentComancheraids.Overthenextfouryears,thepoliticalsituationwithMexicodeteriorated,leadingTexassettlerstorevoltin1835.Astheunrestspread,ColonelDomingodeUgartechea,thecommanderoftheMexicanArmyinTexas,requestedthecannon’sreturn.Thesettlersrefused,andUgartecheasent100mentoretrieveit.

Withintwodays,some140TexiansgatheredatGonzales,alldeterminednottogiveupthecannon.Asthebattledrewnear,twoyoungladiesfromGonzaleshastilypreparedaflagbearinganimageofacannonandthewords“ComeandTakeIt.”IntheearlyhoursofOctober2,the settlersattackedtheMexicancamp,raisingtheflagastheycharged.Afteronlyafewhoursoffighting,theMexicansoldierswithdrew.

Now the LoneStarBrewingCompany hasintroduced special “ComeandTakeIt” cans.

“LoneStarBeeris‘TheNationalBeerofTexas’andwearealwaystruetoourroots,”saidElkinVasco,LoneStarBeerBrandManager.“Whetherwe’reparticipatinginlocalevents,welcomingout-of-townersorhelpingoutourneighbors,everythingwedoshowsourprideinbeingatrueTexasbeer.Wecan’tthinkofabetterwaytocontinuethistraditionthanbycelebratingTexasIndependenceDaywiththeiconic‘ComeandTakeit’sloganonourcans.”

The can will only be sold in Texas and will be featured in 12- ounce, 16-ounce and 24-ounce cans. Over 10 million "Come and Take it" cans are being produced for Texas stores that will be available March, 2.
