Jury seated for second Gabriel Moreno murder trial
SAN ANTONIO - A jury was selected Thursday in the Gabriel Moreno murder trial, marking the second time he has been tried for killing Jose Luis Menchaca..
Moreno is accused of killing Menchaca in 2014, then dismembering the body before attempting to burn it in a barbecue pit.
In March of this year, when Moreno was first tried for the murder, a mistrial was declared after the jury deliberated for four days but could not reach a verdict.
Opening arguments are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Friday in 379th District Court, with Judge Ron Rangel presiding.
Daniel Lopez was found guilty earlier this year for his role in Menchaca's death and received a life sentence. A third person, Lopez's girlfriend Candie Dominguez, pleaded guilty and is currently awaiting sentencing.
The murder, which involved a beating with baseball bats, strangulation, dismemberment and partial burning, occurred at a home in the 400 block of Hillwood Drive.
