Hidden San Antonio gem gets polished! Big turnaround for West Side park

Elmendorf Lake Park has a whole new look and feel after multi-million dollar renovation project. Randy Beamer/News 4 San Antonio photo.

Click on the video link to check out my San Antonio's Voice segment on Elmendorf Lake Park, which just re-opened early this year after a massive $16 million makeover project by the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, and the San Antonio River Authority.

And if you've never been there or don't have any idea where it is, first of all, remember that Elmendorf Lake and Elmendorf Lake Park is nowhere near the city of Elmendorf.

Confused? Yep, some people are. Especially because the park had seen better days and not that many people visited the place until the renovation last year gave it a new look and feel.

Elmendorf Lake Park is on the west side just off Commerce Street by Our Lady of the Lake University.

It's miles away from the city of Elmendorf, which is in far southeast Bexar County. But it's worth the effort to check it out. Among the improvements are new pedestrian bridges, hike and bike trails, lights, fountains and aerators for improved water quality in the lake. And a big new swimming pool will be coming soon after San Antonio voters approved the bond issue in May.

And even without all that, a nice sunset over the lake with OLLU in the background is worth the trip alone. Just make sure you take your camera.
