A man convicted of killing another man and then grilling his remains on a barbecue pit apparently tried to fight off guards as he was escorted to the courthouse on Thursday morning.

Just as Daniel Moreno Lopez was to be driven to the courthouse, he became violent with guards, according to sources, prompting an encounter with armed members of the Bexar County Sheriff's SERT team. Deputies got Lopez under control and escorted him to court in a heavily-armed caravan. Inside the courtroom, he sat by himself and was surrounded by armed guards.

Lopez was convicted in June of killing and dismembering Jose Luis Menchaca in 2014. At the time of Lopez' arrest, court papers detailed the gruesome killing, noting that several children heard the victim screaming for help as he was beaten to death with baseball bats. During the trial, it was revealed that Menchaca's body was dismembered and burned on a grill in an attempt to hide the evidence. Some of the remains were later found in a plastic tub in the home's detached garage.

Deborah Hernandez, Dominique's parents had questions for Lopez.

"Why her," Hernandez asked. "Why my daughter? When he knew that she had kids."

Deborah and her husband David are now taking care of Dominique's three kids.

In court on Thursday, a witness testified she saw Lopez shoot and kill his girlfriend at an apartment in Pleasanton just a couple months before Menchaca's killing. She claimed she Lopez dismembered her body, too.

Sentencing will continue tomorrow, he faces up to life in prison.
