Four ways to protect your home from thieves
SAN ANTONIO —
It takes just a few seconds for a thief to get inside a home. So here are four things you can do to keep intruders out.
- Consider motion lights or surveillance cameras with a high resolution. The video quality will be helpful to share on social media if you spot strange activity. You'll also want the cameras connected to an app so you can monitor away from home.
- If you are home, don't ignore a stranger knocking at the door. Talk from inside the door and call police if something doesn't seem right.
- Police say you should also learn to appreciate a nosey neighbor. If someone else is watching your neighborhood, you'll want your neighbor keeping eyes on the community, too.
- Lastly, replace short screws with longer ones and a strike plate to reinforce your door. A thief may still be able to kick in the door, but it will take more time and several more kicks; they may just give up.
Other tips include making sure you lock all doors and windows, keep the garage door closed day and night, and don't leave an extra key in an obvious place.
