Border Patrol agents arrested five accused drug smugglers and seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana Wednesday in Cameron County during two separate events.

Agents assigned to the Harlingen Border Patrol Station say several people illegally entered the U.S. near Carritos. When agents responded, several people returned to the Rio Grande and swam back to Mexico.

During a search of the area, agents found two Mexican juveniles and three bundles of marijuana weighing more than 130 pounds.

Later that day, agents working near Brownsville responded to reports of people crossing the Rio Grande illegally with bundles of narcotics on their backs. Agents responded and arrested all three people, and seized two bundles of marijuana weighing more than 90 pounds.

Agents determined the individuals were Mexican nationals, with one of them being 17 years old.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has taken custody of the marijuana and will seek prosecution against all of the individuals in both cases.
