An off-duty Bexar County deputy was arrested on DWI and drug charges following an early morning crash along Loop 410.

Heriberto Alejandro Rivera, 25, a 5-year veteran of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, faces charges of driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Salazar said Rivera was arrested shortly before 4 a.m., after an officer witnessed him crashing into a concrete barrier along Loop 410 at Ingram Road. After his arrest, San Antonio police officers searched his truck and found evidence of 'hash oil,' said Salazar.

Considering the circumstances, Salazar said he ordered Rivera to submit to a drug test, adding that if he fails the test or refuses to take it, he will be dismissed from the agency.

Rivera is currently on unpaid administrative leave pending the investigation.

He is the 25th employee of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office to be arrested so far in 2018; 23 deputies and two civilian employees have been arrested.

Salazar said his office is working with Alcoholics Anonymous to try to get deputies help. The department hired a full-time psychologist that will start next month.
