Classes offer parents, babies a musical good time

By APRIL YOUNGNews 4 San AntonioSAN ANTONIO - It's never too early to begin music education, and the organizers of Music Together understand that."The first thing I thought about the class was, 'Oh no, what did I get myself into' because you have to get past the idea of I am going to be jumping around, I'm going to be singing, I'm going to get scarves and turn around. But it's all for their benefit," says Gilbert Gonzalez, a dad whose child is participating in a Music Together class. And it's benefits like thinking and speaking at higher levels, lifting their children's self-esteem and self-confidence and improving their condition, that's making these classes popular. "Music lights up the brain in a different way, and we connect with our children in a different way when we sing to them," says Rebecca Morgan of Music Together.Babies and children up to 4 years old, along with their parents, even grandparents can participate in the program at the Radius building in downtown San Antonio. The class is a fun way for the whole family to spend time together."It's just a great way to start our weekend; everybody's together, we make music and have a great time," says mom Smita Bhakta. That great time includes 45 minutes of playing and actually bonding musically with their children. {}"At this age with Music Together, they're watching their parents. Parents are a great model, so when parents come into the class, they're singing and playing along, with their children," says Morgan. It's something dads might be a little hesitant to do at first."The first class I'm kind of used to it and I can always tell the new dads are a little bit more reluctant to jump around with a scarf in their hand," says Gonzalez. But even the guys learn to love it along with their kids. Especially when they know singing and dancing, will help their babies succeed. The next Music Together class starts in July. For more information, click here.
