Bystanders rush to help man after he hits pole, car bursts into flames

A man died after he crashed his car into a pole on the south side overnight.

Officers were called to the 2300 block of Southcross at about 12:59 a.m. for reports of a major crash. When they arrived, witnesses said a man driving a pickup truck was speeding eastbound on E. Southcross when he lost control, jumped a curb and hit the marquise. Bystanders pulled him out and attempted CPR, but were unsuccessful. The truck then suddenly burst into flames.

When first responders arrived, the man was officially pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released at this time. He was only described as a white male in his 60s.

Officers said the man was driving 60 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.
