LAREDO, Texas -- Border Patrol agents rescued 55 undocumented immigrants Wednesday from a tractor-trailer on Interstate Highway 35.
Authorities said Border Patrol agents stopped a tractor-trailer at the Border Patrol checkpoint. During the inspection, a service canine alerted to the odor of narcotics and/or concealed humans, and after agents broke the seal to the trailer they discovered 55 individuals being transported inside.
Reports said the conditions inside of the trailer were potentially lethal with internal temperatures of 100 degrees. There was limited airflow inside and the individuals were found sweating profusely. They were evaluated by an Emergency Medical Technician and all found in stable health conditions.
“The United States Border Patrol not only protects the nation’s borders, but also ensures those who cross into the United States illegally are treated humanely," Laredo Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens said. "We will continue in the disruption and deterrence of any careless tactics utilized by smugglers."
The immigrants were identified from Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Honduras and Nicaragua. The United States citizen driver was arrested, and the tractor-trailer was seized.
