SAN ANTONIO – In honor of Black History month, Apartment list and Black@A-List partnered up to create a list of the best cities for Black Professionals and San Antonio came in at number three on the top 10 list.

Four things were used to determine the list: Community and Representation, Economic Opportunity, Housing Opportunity, and Business Environment.

Austin, Houston, and Dallas also made the top 10 list. It’s no surprise that Texas is one of the best states to live in, but San Antonio ranks higher in the list with a score of 66.08 because of its high ratings in economic opportunity, and housing opportunity. Categories in community and representation and business environment rank pretty low which is what affects us from being number one.

What makes San Antonio a good city to live in for black individuals? Well, for starters the black employment rate is pretty high, and also the black median income.

San Antonio also has the highest rate of black graduates. In fact, Texas has the second most historically black colleges and universities, with Alabama coming in at number one.

Low ratings in the business environment keep us from being higher on the list. What that means is that black-owned businesses are not as supported as they should be. So, how about having lunch at Jamaica Jamaica Cuisine located at Austin Highway, or taking a boxing class at Black Stallion Boxing Plus. San Antonio has a very large amount of black-owned businesses to support.

Another key factor that fails us in being number one is that the black homeownership rate is at an average of 19.4 percent. Which is higher than the national average, but it is 10 percent lower than the state’s average.

Houston comes behind us in fourth place with a score of 63.78, making Dallas at number five which is one of the fastest-growing black communities. And finally, number nine on our list is Austin with a score of 57.1.

Here is the Top 10 list

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Atlanta
  3. San Antonio
  4. Houston
  5. Dallas
  6. Raleigh, North Carolina
  7. Lakeland, Florida
  8. Orlando, Florida
