Seahawks running back gives back to local school
SAN ANTONIO -- Remember Derrick Coleman? The deaf running back who won a Super Bowl with Seattle this year? His story made national news, and made Derrick a hero to the hearing impaired all over the country, including to kids here in San Antonio.
Sunshine Cottage has been helping San Antonio children for over six decades. I call it the "miracle school" because in simple terms, it teaches hearing impaired kids how to speak.
That's something Derrick Coleman knows all about, but he never knew about Sunshine until this week.
Derrick posted a contest on his Facebook page, asking his fans to vote for the organization that best serves either deaf children or bully prevention and Sunshine Cottage won!
Derrick sells T-shirts with slogans like, "No Excuses" and other images that highlight his hearing loss.
By winning the contest, Coleman is donating the profits from his T-shirt sales to Sunshine Cottage. The kids have been tweeting thank you pictures, but Sunshine is about the spoken word, making this thank you, even more special.
Sunshine graduates, kids like Christian Lewis consider Derrick a role model. In Christian's case, he plays football too--hoping one day to go from Alamo Heights to the NFL. Derrick has shown him how.
But lets keep the story going, lets get Derrick to come here..to visit the kids at Sunshine Cottage.
Maybe a long shot, but worth a shot.
Tweet him, @dc2forlife. Tell him to visit Sunshine by hash tagging #derrick-to-sa
Tell him the miracle school wants to meet the miracle football star.
