San Antonio police officer shot while chasing robbery suspects
SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio police tell us they have reports that two people are in custody in Poth after a San Antonio Police Department officer was shot in the line of duty Sunday morning. Chief William McManus told us a suspected robber led police on a chase in the early hours, and then shot the officer.
Around 4:00 a.m. Sunday, police spotted what appeared to be the suspect's car near S.E. Military in a business robbery, and began to follow the car. The driver of that car led police on a chase down I-37 heading south and began shooting at the officers' vehicles.
Just outside the Bexar County line, Chief McManus tells News 4 San Antonio that one of the suspect's bullets went through the windshield of a patrol car and struck a 7-year veteran on the SAPD force in the head. He crashed his patrol car. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery. Upon last check, he was in ICU.
Two suspects have been arrested in Wilson County, but their identies are not known at this time. They were caught after a foot chase in Poth, near Hwy 181 and FM 224.
We have crews at the scene of the shooting and at the hospital for updates on the officer.
