Hoggatt's complete-game shutout leads Rattlers past Chargers to take series opener
SAN ANTONIO - Two local teams face off for a trip to the state finals. The last time that happened in the highest classification, none of the current players were even born.
In 1991, Clark beat MacArthur, and 26 years later, Reagan and Churchill are in a regional final. The Rattlers lost both District 26-6A games to the Chargers this season.
But Jake Hoggatt hurled a gem, pitching a one-hit shutout, while striking out six in leading Reagan (29-8) to a 4-0 win over Churchill in the Region IV-6A championship series opener at Wolff Stadium Thursday night.
It was Hoggatt's third complete game win this postseason.
"It felt good because I knew coming into it I was throwing my offspeed pretty well," Hoggatt said. "And once I got out there and I was throwing it pretty well, it just kept rolling."
The Chargers (25-8-2) got their lone hit off Hoggart when Jesse Herrera singled in the second inning, but Churchill was unable to bring him home.
Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is set for 5 p.m. today at Wolff Stadium.
