Ex-Spur Jonathon Simmons insists first trip back to SA won't be emotional
Tonight the San Antonio Spurs will host the Orlando Magic in preseason action but it also marks the first time former Spur Jonathon Simmons will be back in the Alamo City where his NBA career began.
Recall he paid a fee to tryout with the Spurs G-League affiliate, Austin, and the rest as they say, is history.
Last season he had a coming out party improving his defense and offense. In the postseason, he shined for the Spurs versus Houston and Golden State. He appeared in 15 playoff games, averaging 10.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 20.4 minutes.
This improved play earned him a nice contract with the Magic this upcoming season (three-year deal at $18 million) and a larger role with an NBA team.
But if coming back to his NBA roots will cause Simmons to get emotional, think again. For him it's still business on the court.
“Nah, I come to work,” Simmons said. “No emotions. I just will be happy to see those guys and the staff as well.”
Emotional or not, Spurs fans in attendance will be sure to give him a warm reception tonight. He won San Antonio fans over with his grit, athleticism, and his highlight-worthy plays.
