Malnourished horses putting on weight at new rescue

"They are doing much better in such a short time," Darla Cherry said. "They have shown a lot of improvement so that is a good thing so when we have them six months they are going to look fabulous."

Last week, the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace ruled there was evidence some horses at Schwartz Farms suffered cruelty and neglect.

The judge also decided they should stay at the Meadow Haven Horse Rescue, where they had been staying since July 7th when the Bexar County Sheriff's Office removed them.

News 4 visited the horses after 3 weeks in the care of Director, Darla Cherry.

"They are doing much better in such a short time," Cherry said. "They have shown a lot of improvement so that is a good thing so when we have them six months they are going to look fabulous."

Looking at before and after photos, some of the horses already show a visible improvement, although even Cherry admits some of the critical horses have a long road ahead of them.

According to half a dozen former Schwartz Farms workers, before they were seized by law enforcement, the horses were being fed brewers grain, which has been compared to humans surviving on crackers alone.

Cherry said she is not only feeding them hay, but also protein pellets.

"I have feed in front of them 24-7 and we feed them twice a day, so they've been putting it on pretty good," Cherry said.

She has also been working to ensure the horses are getting adequate hydration and sodium.

"They were lacking salt when we put salt blocks out there they really hit them hard, so what I was seeing (was) that they were lacking from minerals and salt," Cherry said.

Many of the horses also received evaluations and veterinary care the first week at Meadow Haven Horse Rescue.

Cherry is now working to get some volunteers out to the property and is planning to have a volunteer day soon to evaluate those interested in helping out.

Feeding the 48 animals from Schwartz Farms plus the 150 that already live at Meadow Haven is adding up and Cherry says donations of any type are welcome.
