New FDA Calorie Rules Go Into Effect Today

San Antonio -- After years of delays a new calorie labeling rule goes into effect today.

It calls for all restaurants, grocery stores and movie theaters with 20 or more locations to put the calorie count next to each food offering on their menu. Congress initially asked for this 8 years ago. It finally got approved in 2014 and a number of delays it is now in effect.

A spokeswoman for HEB told News 4 that the grocery store chain implemented the calorie count months ago so they are in compliance with the prepared food calorie requirements.

Since Santikos has less than 20 locations the rule does not apply. But a call to Santikos offices to see if they have plans to voluntarily offer calorie counts was not immediately returned.

The purpose of the new rule appears to be two fold. First to inform patrons about the calories they are about to intake in case they want to make a healthier choice. Secondly, to possibly promote competition among businesses to offer healthier alternatives compared to their rivals.

Ultimately this appears to be a effort to help Americans with their uphill battle against obesity.

As for enforcement, the FDA will not be penalizing any businesses not in compliance for the first year that the new rule is in place.

AFTER YEARS OF DELAYS A NEW CALORIE LABELING RULE THAT WAS FINALIZED BACK IN 2014 DURING THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION – FINALLY GOES INTO EFFECT TODAY.

AS NEWS 4 SAN ATONIO’S MICHAEL GAROFALO TELLS US IT’S MEANT TO IMPROVE PEOPLE’S HEALTH AND POSSIBLY EVEN INSPIRE SOME HEALTHY RESAURANT COMPETITION.

PKG

FROM JUMBO BUTTERY POPCORN AT THE MOVIE THEATER TO A MOCHA GRANDE AT STARBUCKS – A NEW FDA RULE – MEANS BEGINNING TODAY RESTAURANTS, GROCERY STORES AND MOVIE THEATER CHAINS WITH 20 OR MORE LOCATIONS WILL HAVE TO SHOW CALORIES COUNTS FOR THE FOOD ON THEIR MENUS.

OF COURSE MANY RESTAURANTS ARE ALREADY COMPLYING WITH THIS MEASURE WHICH WAS FINALIZED BACK IN 2014 DURING THE OBAMA ADMINSTRATION – AND DELAYED A NUMER OF TIMES UNTIL FINALLY GOING INTO EFFECT TODAY.

REPORTEDLY CONGRESS ASKED FOR THESE CALORIE REVEALING MENUS 8 YEARS AGO BUT THEY GOT A LOT OF PUSH BACK FROM SOME FOOD INDUSTRY GROUPS INCLUDING THOSE FROM PIZZA COMPANIES.

AND DOMINOS’S PIZZA REPORTEDLY MADE A LAST DITCH EFFORT TO DELAY THIS RULE CHANGE AGAIN – BUT FAILED.

IN OUR AREA THIS WILL NOT APPLY TO SANTIKOS SINCE THEY DON’T HAVE 20 OR MORE THEATERS.

AND HEB TELLS ME THEY IMPLEMENTED THE CHANGES MONTHS AGO IN THE PREPARED FOODS AREA - SO THEY ARE ALREADY IN COMPLIANCE.

WHAT WILL THE EVENTS BE OF NEW CALORIE COUNT GUIDELINES?

FIRST OFF PEOPLE WILL KNOW EXACTLY HOW MANY CALORIES THEY ARE INTAKING AND MIGHT CHOOSE A HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVE.

AS FOR THE BUSINESSES – THEY MIGHT FIND SOME MOTIVATION TO MAKE THEIR MEALS HEALTHIER WITH LESS CALORIES SO THEIR PRODUCTS LOOK MORE ATTRACTIVE WHEN COMPARED TO THE COMPETION.

AND FOR A NATION – FIGHTING WHAT APPEARS TO BE A LOSING BATTLE OF THE BULGE – THIS MIGHT BE THE JUMP START WE NEED.

OF COURSE ONLY TIME WILL TIME.

AND WHEN IT COMES TO ENFORCEMENT – THE FDA WON’T BE MONETARILY PENALIZING ANY VIOLATORS FOR ONE YEAR.
