Devastating fire at Texas mosque sparks spirit of community & caring
'Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the tremendous support we've received. The outpouring of love, kind words, hugs, helping hands and the financial contributions are examples of the true American Spirit and Humanity at its best with donations coming in from all over the world.'
Investigators don't know yet what caused a quick-spreading fire to gut the Islamic Center of Victoria early Saturday morning, but the people who worship there already know what is coming out of it.
Expressions of support and caring from around the world.
As of this writing, a gofundme page is closing in on $950,000 for the rebuilding of the only mosque in Victoria, which is about 115 miles southeast of San Antonio.
Dr. Iman Hassan, a mosque board member said 'the whole building was engulfed in flames and it was a very dark moment and we felt very alone. But as several hours went by, through facebook and other social media outlets we had immense support and that really put a silver lining on such a dark day."
Members of the mosque want to stress that investigators have no idea what sparked the fire.
It's understandable that they don't want people to jump to the easy conclusion that anti-Muslim sentiment led to arson fire.
The Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is helping local authorities try to determine the cause of the fire, but they say it could be weeks or even longer before they have an idea. Or at least release their findings.
When they do, we'll report on it. So stay tuned for that.
But for now, it's just nice to that from something so awful, people who care can create something very special
