Our City, Our History: Missions provide historical education, help drive tourism
SAN ANTONIO —
The old Spanish missions of San Antonio are key to San Antonio's history, but they also help drive tourism.
Tourists come from all over the world just to visit these missions and learn about our history. Concepcion, Espada, San Juan, San Jose and the Alamo make up the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas. Each mission also serves as an active parish.
"It's always really interesting just to see as a cultural thing, like what was here before, how it was built, and what remains," said Karen Meraw from Detroit, Michigan.
The grounds of the parks are taken care of by the National Park Service. The government does not fund the churches or the work they need done.
