Michigan mother arrested after refusing to vaccinate son, loses custody
DETROIT, Michigan (WDIV) —
A Michigan mother was arrested after refusing an order to vaccinate her son.
Rebecca Bredow spent nearly one week in jail for the offense. This week, she lost primary custody.
For the first nine years of his life, the unidentified 9-year-old boy in this case only saw his father, James Horne, every other weekend and a couple of hours on Wednesday nights.
Bredow and Horne had their marriage annulled in 2008 and mom had primary custody all that time.
A referee looking at the case decided Horne should now have joint custody and Judge Karen McDonald approved the referee's recommendation.
Bredow emerged outside the courtroom devastated.
"I wasn't expecting to lose primary custody of my son today so I apologize I don't have much to say. I still need to talk to my lawyers. I feel a bit spun around right now and in shock because I was expecting to get him home today so I'm a little upset," she said.
Bredow spent five days in jail. She will pick her son up tomorrow.
She and Horne have been ordered not to discuss these developments with the boy or discuss the other parent with him either.
The boy received four of the vaccinations Monday while Bredow was in jail.
