13-year-old boy saves school bus from crashing after driver has medical emergency
LA GRANGE, Texas —
A 13-year-old boy is being called a hero in La Grange. Karson Vega saved his school bus from crashing last week when his bus driver had a medical emergency and could no longer drive.
Vega jumped into the driver's seat when he saw the driver could no longer control the bus and steered the students to safety.
The seventh grader says he didn't have a good place to pull over, so he sat on the bus driver's lap and drove for a couple of miles before being able to safely stop. Seven people were on board the bus -- six students and the bus driver.
The bus driver was taken to the hospital and is now recovering after being released.
School officials are crediting Vega for preventing a dangerous situation from becoming tragic.
"It could have been a very tragic situation, but it turned out better than you could ever imagine," La Grange Independent School District Superintendent William D. Wagner.
