Southwest Research Institute Reaches 70 Year Mark
SAN ANTONIO -- This is a big week for a hidden gem in the world of scientific research and development. San Antonio based Southwest Research Institute is marking 70 years today since Tom Slick, an inventor, businessman and adventurer, founded the organization.
In the early days the institute's work focused on things like automotive testing, environmental research, and radio direction finding. But these days their work stretches from deep space to the depths of the world's oceans. Current projects include satellite development to monitor weather and improve hurricane forecast models, robotics and energy efficiency, among many others such as self driving cars.
The Southwest Research Institute employs close to 3,000 and sits on 1200 acres near Culebra and NW Loop 410.
