San Antonio officer charged with DWI following crash that injured Kirby policeman
KIRBY, Texas —
A San Antonio Police Department officer was arrested and charged with DWI after a rear-end crash that injured a Kirby police officer early Friday morning.
According to Kirby Police Chief Kevin Bois, the injured officer had pulled another driver over along FM 78 and was sitting in his patrol vehicle when he was hit by a pickup truck at about 3 a.m.
The driver who had been pulled over, stayed with the injured officer and called 911. Kirby police, San Antonio police and the Bexar County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident scene as they were also alerted by a distress signal triggered by the accident.
The officer was taken to Northeast Methodist Hospital for treatment and was later released. Chief Bois said he was resting at home.
The suspect was later identified by SAPD as Officer Armando Alvarado, Jr., a 1-year veteran of the agency. He is currently charged with DWI.
An SAPD spokesperson said Alvarado remained on paid administrative leave.
Chief Bois said he was awaiting more information from SAPD and BCSO about the investigation into the accident.
