Marble Falls area couple speaks out about recent road rage shooting on FM 1431
A Marble Falls area family is still wondering why they were targeted in a bizarre case of road rage. Burnet County authorities say they're still investigating the case where a man allegedly ran the family off FM 1431 and then shot at them.
Johnny Henderson is still nursing a broken hand from his part in ending the incident. The Hendersons say last week in the dark of night they were run off the road. And when the other driver got out of his car things went from bad to worse. Johnny’s wife Genice says, “He got out and reached underneath the seat and got a gun from underneath the seat. And that's when I yelled, 'He has a gun! He has a gun!"
Luckily an off-duty Austin Police officer came upon the scene and engaged the still-unnamed suspect. Genice recalls, “The police officer was shooting at the suspect that was shooting at us and the suspect started shooting back at the officer. And when the officer shot the suspect all he said was, 'Ow, you shot me.'"
The family scattered into the tall grass nearby. And while Johnny looked for his wife he encountered the suspect who was now fleeing from the officer. Johnny says, “So I'm crawling and we meet up face to face in the grass. And he had this look on his face. He's smiling."
But he was also wounded and still armed. Johnny adds, “I couldn't get the gun so I punched him I don't know exactly how many times. A lot of times. That's how I broke my hand. I believe he was unconscious when I was able to twist his arm and get the gun out of his hand."
Johnny and Genice are thankful the officer came along when he did, and they’re grateful for the support they've received since the incident. But something like this is going to be hard to shake. Johnny says, “It's really really hurt us. I don't know if Christmas is really going to be the same. I don't feel up to doing the holiday."
