Wagner Thunderbirds headed to state tournament for first time in 7 years
LAREDO, Texas —
Wagner has had some of the best players to come out of San Antonio but they've never won a state title.
First, you've got to make the state tournament, and that was on the line Saturday.
The next great player from San Antonio, Tristan Clark, is a Baylor commit who needed a big game to beat Austin Westlake. Down by 7 in the 4th, Clark cut the lead to 5. But Deraun Clark, the coach's nephew, owned the fourth quarter, with 10 points.
It was all tied up with 10 seconds left, when Kevin McCullar drove it out to Deraun Clark for 3. Wagner won 55-53. They are now headed to state for the first time in 7 years.
“I can't explain it, it's real emotion,” said Wagner Head Coach Rodney Clark. “I'm just blessed right now. It doesn’t matter what you did the whole game. That one counted. My nephew stepped up and made probably the biggest shot of his life.”
