Driver of stolen car killed in violent crash on Loop 410, 5 hurt
SAN ANTONIO - Police say the driver of a stolen car was killed in a violent crash that started as a carjacking at a West Side apartment complex on the city's West Side early Friday morning.
The wreck prompted the shutdown of the eastbound lanes of Loop 410 at Summit Parkway for several hours. They were reopened by 6 a.m.
According to police Chief William McManus, four people approached a man in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Westward Drive and beat him up before taking his car. He was also hit by the car as the suspects drove away.
Police were able to follow the stolen car because it had some sort of GPS tracking system installed, but the during the chase, the suspects collided with a white pickup truck on Loop 410 near Summit Parkway. The crash killed the driver of the stolen car and injured three females who were riding in the vehicle. They were taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment.
A couple in the truck was taken to University Hospital and are expected to be okay.
The name of the driver killed in the crash was not released. The victim of the carjacking was also taken to University Hospital for treatment.
