Man charged with abandoning injured 5-year-old after accident
UPDATE: Police have charged Jose Wilmer Orellana, 38, with failure to stop and render aid. In court papers, Orellana is accused of leaving the scene of the accident and then calling 911 nearby. When officers arrived, he did not mention the accident, but claimed he had been assaulted at a night club.
Later at the hospital, investigators said Orellana admitted he was involved in the crash, but said his injured daughter she said she was ok and that he left her in the custody of a Good Samaritan who pulled up to the upside down truck on the main lanes of Loop 1604.
He also admitted to drinking before the crash, according to arrest papers. See previous story below.
SAN ANTONIO - A driver ran off and left a child with a broken leg inside a truck after he reportedly drove off a bridge and landed upside down on the main lanes of Loop 1604.
The accident happened at Loop 1604 and Blanco Road at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday night. Officers said they found a 5-year-old girl inside the truck.
They believe Jose Wilmer Orellana took an extremely wide turn, drove through a barricade and off the bridge. After he landed, Orellana ran off.
The child's mother was in another vehicle behind them; she pulled over to call for help. Her daughter was rushed to University Hospital.
Police issued a warrant for Orellana's arrest. He is wanted for failure to stop and render aid.
