Downtown San Antonio prepares for New Year's Eve celebration
Streets are already closed downtown, as the countdown begins for San Antonio's New Year celebration.
"It's the largest event we've ever done,” said San Antonio Special Project Manager Tonya Baum. “Seeing those fireworks at the tower, and the countdown clock, it's going to be magical."
More than 25,000 people are expected to visit the city’s Hemisfair Park for the large party, while businesses in the surrounding area are hoping to cash in.
"It's great for us,” said Cristian Acosta from Pat O’Brien’s. “It brings a lot of people downtown. Everybody is in a good mood, it's good business for us."
On Saturday crews spent time setting up a large Ferris wheel, and constructed 2 concert stages. Officials are predicting a large crowd despite the possibility of cold weather.
“We have this weather ever year,” said Baum. “I think San Antonians just love to come out and celebrate together”
Many hotels in the area, have been sold out for months in preparation for this weekend’s festivities. Some families are in town to celebrate the new year, and aren’t worry about the cold temperatures.
“This is warm to us,” said the Bertoli family visiting from Chicago. “We'll take this. Anything over 32 is warm."
"Make sure you come early,” said Baum. “Enjoy all of the festivities, and have a good New Year’s Eve."
Officials say the festivities will take place no matter the weather. If you’re planning on taking Uber or Lyft, special discount codes are available. According to Uber, an unknown amount of riders can use the Code “COORSSATX” for discounts, while Lyft riders can use the code “FASTEST”.
