Adult Protective Services to gain second psychiatrist for client evaluations
San Antonio -- Currently there's only one geriatric psychiatrist for Region 8 working with Adult Protective Services. There are 28 counties that make up Region 8, from Victoria to Del Rio.
"I go out every Wednesday with APS, " said Dr. Jason Schillerstrom, a geriatric psychiatrist.
APS Specialist Sandra Hasbach says Dr. Schillerstrom is vital to an investigation. "He helps us determine if our clients are safe or not," added Hasbach.
The psychiatrist gives APS a recommendation after evaluating a person's life history, medical issues, financial abilities, memory, and if they suffer from depression.
The state agency gets thousands of calls a year, but not all cases will need Dr. Schillerstrom's attention. "Maybe they are fine and just need Meals on Wheels," added Hasbach.
But in just a couple of weeks, Dr. Schillerstom will no longer be the only geriatric psychiatrist working with APS for Region 8. By mid-July, APS will have two specialized doctors.
"In the end, we just want to make sure that our clients are safe," said Hasbach.
Dr. Schillerstrom says when it comes to your aging family member, it's about sitting down and having those tough conversations.
"The biggest step - and sometimes the hardest step - is just acknowledging what's right there in front of us."
