Try summer 'super fruits' for better nutrition
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Some of the tastiest foods for good health may not even be on your summer shopping list.
As food researchers learn more about the nutrients in food that are good for you, they discover some of the best are those combined. Local 12's health anchor Liz Bonis went food shopping for the best summer super foods Wednesday.
It's the perfect season for summer food shopping, especially if you know what you like: like watermelon, strawberries and kiwi. While those are all great good for you foods, you might not even know you like a few of the newest super fruits.
According to Jerry with Madison's at Findlay Market, who stocks fruit daily and knows they are fresh, says foods like orangetti -- spaghetti squash that's orange inside--, white peaches, homegrown heirloom tomatoes and sugar babies -- no-seeded round watermelons -- are some of the best super fruits.
Canary melons are also sweet, and so are crenshaws -- a cross between honeydew melons and cantaloupe. Just cut them open, scoop out the seeds and they are ready to eat.
What makes these super fruits is they have good nutrition, they have a good taste and they are only available certain times of the year, many in the summer months. That may be the way the seasons go: they gives us what our body needs for protection against certain things in the sun and the air .
While there is nothing wrong with your traditional favorites, you might find a new tradition to try -- any way you slice it.
