SAN ANTONIO - A Northside Independent School District 5th grade teacher has resigned after a student told the principal she was drinking beer in class.
District spokesperson Pascual Gonzalez says up to four students spotted the Kuentz Elementary school teacher drinking from a beer can Feb. 4 and one of them reported it to the principal. The student also smelled alcohol on her breath, and one reportedly took a picture.
The spokesperson says the teacher called in sick the next day and was told not to return to the school. She then resigned Feb. 6 when Human Resources told her about the allegations, which she denied.
The 39-year-old teacher had been with the district since 2008 and Northside is notifying the State Board for Educator Certification, which is required by law, Gonzalez said.
A new teacher has been hired to fill her position and parents of the students in her classroom were notified about the incident. Gonzalez said the investigation was closed when the teacher resigned and she is not facing any charges.
News 4 San Antonio is not identifying the teacher because she isn't charged with a crime.
